An Interview With Elsa Hosk

Elsa and team behind the scenes

An exclusive Q&A with Elsa Hosk and Business & Pleasure Co. on our new collaboration, Elsa by Business & Pleasure Co.

Q: Working with you on this project has been a treat. We've been amazed by your taste and  knowledge of furniture. When did you first discover your interest in furniture?

A: I think from a young age. My parents were always into design and architecture, especially my dad. He would take me on tours around our suburb in Stockholm, where we admired incredible funky houses from the 50s. Even though I didn't care much at the time, I now realize it sparked a deep interest in me. This passion led me to purchase and restore a mid-century modern case study house by Richard Neutra. I can really nerd out with that—buying books, meeting people with similar interests, and diving into the furniture and architecture world. It's a true passion of mine, even more so than fashion.

Q: How would you describe your aesthetic? Has your Swedish heritage had an influence?

A: I definitely have that Swedish sensibility when it comes to design and function. I'm influenced by pioneers of functionalist and minimal design, like John Provey and Charlotte Perriand.

Working on this outdoor collection with Business & Pleasure Co. was a perfect fit because the aesthetic of the 50s really resonates with me. Seeing the quality and sturdiness of the products in real life was incredible.

Q: Where do you draw inspiration from?

A: Inspiration comes from my childhood experiences with my dad, who had a deep interest in design and architecture. We would explore neighborhoods filled with mid-century houses, which shaped my passion for both architecture and furniture. The restoration of my mid-century modern home and the discovery of vintage design books have been huge sources of inspiration.

Q: What is your most favorite space in your home?

A: I'm currently renovating a house from 1949, and it's a big project that's been taking some time. We're restoring it to its original plans, designed by Richard Neutra, without changing anything. The whole process, though frustrating at times, has been like surgery—meticulously restoring everything from the built-ins to the wood and terrazzo. I love how perfect it was designed back then, and restoring it has only deepened my appreciation for the brilliance of the architect.

Q: We hear you’ve been a fan of the brand for a while. When did you first hear about Business & Pleasure Co.?

A: I've seen it on Instagram and have always admired B&P Co,'s vintage-looking furniture. The branding and photoshoots were beautiful, and I always wanted some pieces for myself. It was really exciting when we got the call to collaborate, especially since this is my first furniture collaboration. I hope it's the first of many because it's been so much fun.

Q: What inspired this collection with Business & Pleasure Co.

A: This collection was definitely inspired by a throwback to the glamour of the 1950s, blending modern sensibility with a nostalgic touch. The influence of Hollywood movie stars and the classic vibe of Slim Aarons' photography were key inspirations. It’s all about bringing that old Hollywood charm into modern outdoor spaces.

Q: What drove you to partner with Business & Pleasure Co.?

A: The partnership felt like a natural fit because of B&P Co.'s vintage aesthetic, which aligns with my love for mid-century design. Seeing the quality of the products firsthand solidified my decision – they’re sturdy, beautiful, and meticulously crafted, just like the vintage pieces I admire.

Q: What inspired the prints & colors of this collection?

A: The colors and prints were inspired by vintage photos from the 50s and 60s, especially those of Slim Aarons and old Hollywood icons. The red, in particular, is a favorite because it’s the perfect shade–warm, rusty, and not too bright. It evokes a nostalgic, glamorous vibe that's just right for poolside lounging.

Q: Do you have any favorites from the collection?

A: It's so hard to choose, but I absolutely love the red color next to a turquoise pool—it’s such a fun combo. I'm also obsessed with the green stripe and cream, which I'll be using next to the house. The Love Seat in the stripe is incredibly chic, and I can’t wait to see it set up in mybackyard.

Q: What would you suggest pairing together from the collection?

A: I love the idea of using different colors in different areas. For the pool, the red is stunning, especially paired with cream piping and pillows. The green stripe works beautifully with the metal table and umbrella setup. For a cohesive look, mix and match the pieces across the collection—each setup will have its unique charm while maintaining a vintage feel.

Q: What pieces from the Business & Pleasure Co. collection will be making an appearance in your backyard and pool area?

A: I’ve thought about this so much because it’s so hard to choose! For the pool area, I’m going with the red—it’s such a striking color next to the turquoise pool and greenery. The green stripe and cream setup will be next to the house, blending seamlessly with its colors and the lush landscaping. I also love the Al Fresco Love Seat Cushion Set in Elsa Stripe—it’ll be chic somewhere in the backyard.

Q: What inspired this first collection with Business & Pleasure Co.?

A: This collection was definitely inspired by a throwback. A good marriage of modern sensibility with a touch of vintage nostalgia, blending clean, modern lines with the glamour of the 1950s, reminiscent of Slim Aarons' iconic photography and old Hollywood movie stars.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your family and how you all enjoy your downtime?

A: My daughter, Thule, absolutely loves being outside—it’s her favorite place to be. Even though our pool isn't up and running right now due to renovations, we had a great year enjoying it before we started. We spend a lot of time outside, grilling, having friends over, and just enjoying the yard. Those are the moments I cherish, especially during busy times.
